I have a crashed a car (96 chevy cavalier) beyond repair of the body and it was an automatic (the engine in not damaged) my dad was going to buy a used car (98 chevy cavalier) with the engine shot (its a manual) would it be possible for him to take the engine out of our current one and put it in the one we could buy even though the one we would buy is a standard?

Yes, you have to change many things. Crank, instrument panel, ECU, different sizes and termine.L IMO, it would be cheaper and less headache to buy a car running without any intention of changing.
