Cars make lousy investments unless they are limited editions or real old…. If you like that car go for it …. they are cool and fun to drive. If you had the bucik grand national id say keep it but you dont.
i have a 1997 miata which i love and have had it since 1998 (bought used). my only complaint is i have to replace the battery every 2-3 years which is probably normal. i also let it sit a lot during winter (65K miles on it). i think charging the battery with a battery charger may have ruined the batteries because recently i read not to use a charger on miata batteries. i just spent $1,000 replacing an o-ring for an oil leak which involved changing heater hoses because the oil leaked on them; flushing the transmission, brakes, and power steering which i have never done, but should be part of the maintenance. i have snow tires for it, but it doesn’t go through high snow. i love it because it just keeps on running. gas mileage is okay, but i would expect better from a 4-cyl. i also invested in slotted and cross drilled rotors from Summit Racing, but did not order the brake pads because i didn’t know with the slotted and cross drilled rotor higher quality pads were needed. TiresPlus install and added brake pads for $80 each pair. i also bought new tires at the same time. the brakes and rotors will last a long, long time.
in the last year i have spent around $1,700 for first time general maintenance including tires, high performance brakes and rotors, and flushing all the systems plus the engine repair. at 59K i had the timing belt changed for less than $400. check around for the best repair prices because they vary a lot. the miata has a lot of power and is a fun car to drive especially the drop top. as long as your window is unzipped you can literally drop the top at a stop light (15 seconds). check out this source as i was a member years ago. http://www.mscw.com/
My miata is a pleasure to drive everyday. I do all my own maintenance and performance modification. It is an easy car to work on with a huge online community that can help you with any problems. Miatas are fun and cheap so go for it.
