Major Prius Bumper Dent Repair

Rather than paying for an expensive Toyota bumper replacement after an unpleasant encounter with a parking lot pole, we decide to attempt the do-it-yourself, armed only with a can of solvent, two hair dryers, and some touch-up paint. Half of the fun is listening to Dad’s comments! Your mileage may vary! We were lucky that even though the was huge, it was easy to access the other side of it to push against. We thought about trying the compressed air trick, but the dent was so deep that we were afraid it might pop in the wrong direction! Recorded with the Canon VIXIA HV30 (awesome camcorder!).

  1. waaaaaaaaaw great!

  2. @ Niftyken interesting. I have a Toyota I’d do a little touch on a few UPS but I fear that to get the right color! lol I’ll have to check. Good info!

  3. @ Morganthedog1 Thanks for the compliment! Paint touch-up is Toyota. Your local dealer should be able to tell the exact color you need to match your car. It cost me about $ 10.

  4. Where touching the painting and how did you manage to match the color of your car as well?

  5. woooow

  6. @ StriderTacticaL Excellent tip, thanks! For some reason, I thought we actually did, but I had to see my own video again and realize, no, never did! = D

  7. Heres a tip: Next time you need to do something like this, turn the wheel to the opposite side so you get more space to work through.

  8. @ CheriSasson Yes, I think there are plenty of potential repair – real estate! DCOMM = for the hair dryer (s), use it for much longer than you think necessary. I recommend at least 10 minutes (timed, if you do not leave early). Basically, you want the plastic soft enough to really become flexible. And if 10 minutes is not enough to soften, 5 minutes to go and try again! (By the way, if you use a heat gun, you probably have less time, hehe.)

  9. Haha Maybe I will! It will be fun: the real estate broker who did own car repairs! Well, I fixed a washer, dryer and dishwasher, so why not a car? (Actually I’m very challenged this technique, but it’s amazing what you can do while watching a work of recovery or a video on the Internet!) One last question: How long you are actually using the dryer before you start pushing the tooth?

  10. @ CheriSasson You must make a video! ;]

  11. Hi Ken, Thanks, I found the crack in the front of the plastic cover and I am able to slide my hand there. I will tell you how I fare afterwards.

  12. @ CheriSasson Hello! Basically, there is a plastic cover behind there, probably to protect against mud, etc. In mine, I was able to separate enough to get my hand into the space behind him. It was still a very narrow crack! If necessary, you could probably loosen the screws holding the plastic against the bumper. Good luck!

  13. Hi Ken, gave me a lump in my 2008 Prius that looks exactly like yours. However, I’m sure you’ve been pushed under the car because it’s tough down there that keeps me on my hand and pushing. It’s like a hard plastic. What to do?

  14. Wow. . . that thought. . a gook who can not drive? “I bet you feel dirty chimps a car in a parking lot, and just took off!

  15. @ Yumyumsashimi thanks for the tip!

  16. You can also use polishing compound to remove scratches and old paint on your car.

  17. Sweet

  18. @ Niftyken this mean you can use compressed air? ENT iw was cleaning optical computer store and keyboard cleaning

  19. @ Wintergate RemovAll The solvent is called. I’m not sure what generic name might have. If you use the compressed air trick, you should be able to find the pressure of air pumps, including computer stores. Good luck!

  20. solvent that can be used? and how to use? I tried to find a little carbon dioxide, but could not find one in Australia.

  21. OK

  22. mercedesconn @ Yes, it’s crazy talk. Here, Dent Wizard!

  23. The owner of Dent Wizard said it could be done. He said the plastic is not marked as steel and once that takes the form not be changed. I’ll send this page to be a liar. Thanks

  24. Nice thanks

  25. It really depends if you have access to the interior of the plastic bumper, because the heat and soften the bumpers, you should be able to remove the interior. Good luck!
