My daughter Jessica Bloomfield Kitchens is on a plane today to go to South America, and then to India for 10 months as a missionary. I did not get to kiss her goodbye. My flight instructor told me: you shouldn’t bring PCAS, but I ignored his command and bought an 800 dollar PCAS – and guess what it saved our lives when neither of us saw an aircraft at high velocity.
This is why its very critical to scan around…You may be following rules but the other moron out there might not. Also, deaths might have been prevented if FAA made the following mandatory in ALL light aircraft:
1) PCAS – portable collision avoidance system
2) BRS ballistic parachute system (to prevent hitting ground at terminal velocity)
3) Amsafe Airbags to prevent blunt force trauma
4) Terrain awareness sytem.
See and Avoid and PCAS are 2 main things that could have prevented this
its sad for the poor passengers, but stupid pilots! …1 chance to 1 million for a collision in this wide open sky, and they did it!! congratulations, guys

The pilot of the Piper did not contact any other aircraft in the corridor and then basically hit the helicopter which was an AmericanEurocopter AS-355 commonly called an A-Star, from behind and below the helicopter. ATC is not responsible for what happened, period. Sure, the guy shouldn’t have been talking to his GF while he was directing air traffic but, he was not in control of either of these aircraft at the time and wasn’t supposed to be.
John, sorry but you heard wrong! That corridor is a VFR corridor, which means it is a Visual Flight Rule corridor and ATC is not responsible for that area. If you know anything about flying, a VFR corridor means watch and avoid other aircraft in the area. In addition, that corridor has a flight restriction requiring the pilots to maintain a minimum of 1000 ft AGL and for the pilots to contact other aircraft in the corridor and let them know of their position, air speed, direction of travel.

Have to look at the aviation maps but that airspace under the self for class B airspace of Newark, Kennedy and LaGuardia is class E or G that requires no communication with any ATC in the vicinity if the two aircraft were flying under Visual Flight Rules.
. fixed wing aircraft has the right of way over rotorcraft AND with converging aircraft, the one on the right side has the right of way. Two strikes against the rotorcraft!
