Someone hits my parked car and leaves the scene, does that fall under collision or comprehensive deductible?

Reader Submitted Question:
I noticed that while I can get auto insurance quotes online, there is a separate deductible for and incident. I’m not sure that I understand the differences, and need to know what of these exceptions apply to a situation where someone crashed into my car while it was parked in a parking lot. This person fled the accident scene without a note. My deductibles are different amounts for each type, would this be a comprehensive or collision claim? Thank you.

  1. It would be under your collision coverage. Comprehensive coverage covers only fire, flood, animal damage as well as stolen car.

  2. Collision.

  3. It’s collision.

  4. Collision

Pays the actual cash value of damages to your covered auto (up to the auto’s actual cash value) caused by an impact with another vehicle or object. The amount of your deductible will be subtracted from any settlement. You may want to consider this coverage if your auto is seven years old or newer.

Example: While backing out of a tight parking space, you hit the vehicle next to you. Your collision coverage will pay for damages to your vehicle, beyond your deductible, caused by the impact.

    Comprehensive

Pays for losses to your covered auto (up to its actual cash value) which are not caused by collision. This includes damage caused by fire, theft, glass breakage, riot, windstorm and hail. The amount of your deductible will be subtracted from any settlement.

Example: Vandals break your windshield and spray paint on you car. Comprehensive coverage will pay to restore your vehicle to the condition it was in prior to the incident. You pay only the deductible amount.

  5. This would be a collision claim.
Comprehensive covers animal losses(like hitting a deer), vandalisms, nature, acts of god, etc. Basically anything other than another vheicle hitting your vehicle.
