STEERING AND BRAKING BY AN ALERT DRIVER!
That was Avoiding!
Reducing the effect, involves collapsing, energy absorbing car body structures, and Air Bags with seat belts to minimize body of passengers contact with hard objects in the car.
The new Volvo s60 has this beeping light that comes on if you are on par with crashing into something in front of you. Also, extended side curtain airbags and anti-whiplash seats for other manufacturers.
I think some Mercedes or Lexus models have a system that tries to rotate the seat or something as you are about to get into a crash to try to protect you. I dont know the details though.
Crumple zones that absorb crash energy, antilock brake systems to maintain control in hard braking situations, airbags, following too close radar warning systems, haed restraints (seat backs), interior passenger safety devices (knee cushions, side air bags, passive seat belts), etc.
Lane departure sensors to alert the drivers they are drifting from their lane.
Vehicle infrastructure integration that allows communication between vehicle and traffic signal (e.g., traffic signal will alter its timing to compensate for a vehicle likely to violate or beat the red light, at the same time signal will also advise conflicting left turner not to proceed).
Brains. The single most important technology.
If you use your brains for driving when driving, you avoid all but a very few collisions. If you don’t have collisions, you don’t need to reduce their effect.
Too few people understand this unfortunately. It looks like too many people buy safety features packed cars like Volvo and think now they can get away without using their brains for driving.
exactly what misha says. brains,
and common sense, that´s what i´m saying
For the present day, it is YOUR SENSES … eyes, ears … and reflexes … so with defensive driving, you see the trouble coming, and you manage to swerve, brake, acelerate, whatever to either avoid the trouble, or lessen the impact.
Do you know about seat belts and air bags?
There is something on the ends of cars called a BUMPER which is a rubberized surface that helps in low speed collisions. Some doors have rubber strips to reduce scratches when doors bang into each other in parking lots.
For the future, there will be something called SMART CARS. For example a miniature radar that lets you know that some other car is in your way, so you need to dodge them.
With GPS and cameras every place, you will learn about obstructions that are just around the bend in the road.
